NGOs in North East States of India

North Eastern India is the region comprises the eight contiguous states – Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. North East India is internationally sharing the border with Nepal, Bhutan, China, Bangladesh and Myanmar. North East India is connected to East India with a narrow corridor. Although there is great cultural and religious difference within the states, they have some similarities socially and economically. The region is the home of wild animals like one horned Rhinoceros, Elephants and other wild animals. These States are famous for its Tea Estates, Silk, Petroleum, Handicrafts, Handloom Weaving, Wildlife Sanctuaries, bamboo and Brahmaputra River. They speak the Regional languages – Assamese, Bodo, Meiteilon, Garo, Khasi, Mizo, Kokborok, Bengali, Limbu, Nepali, Hindi, English and the local tribal spoken languages and dialects. North East India is the most Bio-diverse region of the country.
North East Indian states have Ethnic and Tribal groups and communities. The major Tribal and Ethnic Communities of the Eatern Indian states are known as : Adivasi, Ahom, Angami, Ao, Anāl Naga, Apatani, Assamese, Bahun, Bengali, Bhutia, Bishnupriya, Biate, Bodo, Bru, Chakhesang, Chakma, Chhetri, Chutiya, Chorei, Deori, Dimasa, Garo, Gurung, Hajong, Hmar, Jamatia, Karbi, Kami, Khasi, Khampti, Koch, Kom, Konyak, Kuki, Lepcha, Limbu, Lotha, Magar, Mao, Maram, Meitei, Mishing, Mizo, Mara, Monsang, Mishmi, Naga, Nepali, Noatia, Paite, Pnar, Poumai, Purvottar maithili, Rai, Rabha, Ranglong (Langrong), Reang, Rongmei, Sangtam, Sumi, Singpho, Sonowal Kachari, Sylheti, Tamang, Tangkhul, Tiwa, Thengal Kachari, Tripuri, Yimchunger, Zomi people (Paite, Vaiphei, Zou, Teddim, Simte, Gangte) and other communities.
North Eastern India have wide tribal and remote region in India. Many Non Governmental Organisations/ Non Profit Organisations/ Volunteer Organisations (NGOs/ NPOs/ VOs) are working for those tribal and backward areas and their Development and social Welfare Issues. NGOs/ NPOs/ VOs are running the social activities programmes and working for health, education and empowerment, providing services for physical, social, psychological and educational development of children, working towards the women development and education, running activities for prevention of the natural resources and quality improvement, creating the opportunity for livelihood through sustainable use of resources, working for tribal and backward community issues, bamboo plantation, working for ecological stability for socio-economic security of society, running health care programmes, creating and helping the People to create a Self Help Group, operating relief and rehabilitation centres, Creating and supporting the people for development in Rural and Urban areas, working for the welfare and development of deprived street children, orphans, poor old aged people and youth in rural and tribal area, disaster and flood management activities, working for deprived people, awareness programmes for environmental protection, providing opportunities to distress and needy women to earn and live with dignity, malnutrition, working for gender equity and human development, functioning Vocational training courses to motivate people to achieve their requirement, working for children, youth and women care, running animal welfare programmes for pet and wild animals and many other issues.

North Eastern Council of Government of India is the nodal agency for the economic and social development of the North Eastern Region with eight States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.
